What is the difference between vitaMedMD prenatal vitamins and prescription prenatals? |
|
vitaMedMD prenatal vitamins are manufactured and regulated by the same strict FDA standards (CFR111, cGMP) as prescription prenatal vitamins. Prescription prenatal vitamins are dispensed by prescription because they exceed 1mg of Folic Acid.
Dispensing through prescription increases cost. As such, vitaMedMD provides 975 mcg of Folic Acid in all of its prenatal vitamins. The result is you get pharmaceutical-quality, doctor-recommended prenatal vitamins at a fraction of the typical co-pay. |

Why do I need DHA? |
|
DHA provides health benefits for people of all ages. DHA serves as a primary building block for the brain, eyes and nervous system.* Studies have shown that increased availability of DHA during pregnancy and lactation enhances the development of the visual and nervous system of babies and may play an important role in postpartum maternal well-being.*
Some Benefits of DHA During Pregnancy
- May support infant mental development*
- May promote infant visual development*
- May result in higher birth weight*
- May result in the increased length of gestation*
- May help promote full-term delivery*
- May enhance postpartum maternal well-being*
vitaMedMD Prenatal-1 with 200mg of DHA, vitaMedMD 300mg Prenatal DHA and vitaMedMD Combo Pack featuring 300mg of DHA are all formulated with life'sDHA™. life’sDHA™ is 100% Vegetarian and fish-free, with no ocean-borne contaminants such as Mercury or PCBs. |
|
| 6. |
If life'sDHA™ is 100% fish free, where does it come from? |
|
life'sDHA™ comes from a vegetarian algae. Most people mistakenly believe that fish produce their own DHA, when, in fact, it’s the algae they feed on that makes them a rich source of DHA. Martek Biosciences Corporation, the makers of life'sDHA™ produce this algae under an FDA-inspected process in large stainless steel fermentors commonly used in the pharmaceutical, food and biotechnology industries. life'sDHA™ is added to over 95% of US infant formulas. It is also used to fortify a wide range of foods, beverages and dietary supplements. |

Why don’t vitaMedMD prenatal vitamins contain Vitamin A? |
|
With the popularity of multivitamins, it is becoming increasingly important to be aware of the possible teratogenic effects (malformations) of vitamins during pregnancy. Vitamins are essential for maintaining good health, but consumption of large amounts of certain vitamins, particularly A and D, poses a teratogenic risk.
Vitamin A is essential for the normal functioning of the retina and for the growth and differentiation of epithelial tissue, as well as necessary in embryonic development, reproduction and bone growth. However, Vitamin A has been shown to produce malformations of the face, head, heart and nervous system when administered in varying doses.
The CDC, Teratology Society and Council for Responsible Nutrition recommendations for the daily allowance of preformed Vitamin A in pregnancy is 2,700 IU/day or 8,000 IU of beta-carotene. The March of Dimes recommends limiting Vitamin A intake to less than 5,000 IU/day. These recommendations were made because malformations appear to occur at some undetermined level above 5,000 IU and pregnant women in the United States do not seem to benefit from additional Vitamin A as the average person gets more than the recommended daily amount on a regular basis from their diet alone.
In fact, the average American diet provides an abundance of Vitamin A since it's widely available in meat, dairy, fish, eggs, and fortified cereals as well as in most fruits and vegetables in the form of beta-carotene (which gets converted to Vitamin A by your body as needed). 75% of people in developed nations ingest more than the recommended daily amount for Vitamin A on a regular basis.
Accordingly, the average American diet provides more than enough Vitamin A in pregnancy and additional supplementation may only pose unwanted risks to the pregnancy itself. |

| 8. |
Should I continue to take vitaMedMD prenatal multivitamins after I have my baby? |
|
Taking a quality multivitamin and a DHA supplement is encouraged for all women during their postpartum period.* For women who breastfeed, DHA is particularly important during the infant’s first 5 years of life, when brain and eye growths occur.* DHA also provides additional heart benefits to women during their non-pregnant state.* |
|
| 9. |
I think the vitamins may be binding my stomach, what can I do? |
|
vitaMedMD works in conjunction with medical providers who recommend vitaMedMD products. As such, vitaMedMD has a policy of not providing any medical opinions and suggests that you defer to your doctor’s recommendations.
In general, the state of pregnancy often causes constipation, not the vitamins. Consider asking your provider about recommending a stool softener or another method. |

|
| Vitamin D |
|
| 1. |
What is Vitamin D and why is it important to health? |
|
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin found to support health in a number of ways. Sustaining adequate levels of Vitamin D in the body is essential to bone health, in particular, because it enhances the absorption of calcium and phosphorus. |
| 2. |
How can I be ensure I’m getting enough Vitamin D? |
|
It is estimated that 50% of the general population has significant Vitamin D deficiency. While deficiency is present in every group, it varies according to population, including the Elderly (70%), African Americans (90%), Children (55%), and Pregnant Mothers (up to 50%). Vitamin D deficiency is also common in strict vegetarians (who avoid Vitamin D-fortified dairy foods) and those with digestive issues. |
| 3. |
Can I get enough Vitamin D from my diet or the sun? |
|
The influence of diet is minimal and most circulating Vitamin D comes from exposure to sunlight. Sunlight promotes synthesis of Vitamin D; however, the amount of exposure needed to achieve adequate Vitamin D status depends on environmental characteristics, your skin type, age, activity, clothing, and several other factors. Dermatologists recommend overall that it is safest to take Vitamin D supplements and avoid the sun. |
| 4. |
I’ve heard a lot about Vitamin D3 lately. How is it different from other forms of the nutrient? |
|
Vitamin D3, also known as Cholecalciferol, is created naturally by the body when the skin is exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet B radiation (UVB), whereas Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is derived from irradiation of fungi. Evidence exists that body uses Vitamin D3 more efficiently than Vitamin D2. Vitamin D3 is not naturally found in many foods, but levels of this important vitamin can be effectively added and maintained to the body through regular supplementation. However, high-dose preparations had previously only been available in the less active form of Vitamin D2 and required a prescription until now with the convenience of vitaMedMD Vitamin D3 50,000 IU. |
