Importance of DHA . . .
While you may be familiar with the need to take a prenatal vitamin and folic acid, one important nutrient that that you may not know about is DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) omega-3 fatty acid. DHA serves as a primary building block for the brain, eyes and nervous system.* Studies have shown that increased availability of DHA during pregnancy and lactation enhances the development of the visual and nervous system of babies and may play an important role in postpartum maternal well-being.*
Some Benefits of DHA in Pregnancy
May support infant mental development*
May promote infant visual development*
May result in higher birth weight*
May result in the increased length of gestation*
May help promote full-term delivery*
May enhance postpartum maternal well-being*
Mothers who supplement their DHA levels during pregnancy and nursing may improve the level of DHA available to their unborn baby and infant.* Experts in nutrition including the National Institute of Health (NIH) recommend between 200 and 300mg of DHA supplementation per day in pregnant and lactating women.*
DHA however, must be supplemented in the diet because the body is generally unable to synthesize it in significant amounts. Thus, the developing infant must rely on maternal supplementation in pregnancy and while breast feeding. Despite its importance, Americans have among the lowest dietary intake of DHA in the world and expert bodies have advised pregnant and nursing women to limit their fish consumption (the main dietary source of DHA) due to the potentially high levels of contaminants such as mercury found in certain fish.*
life'sDHATMis a patented, vegetarian plant-pure form of DHA, free of ocean-borne contaminants. life'sDHATM is also the primary source of DHA currently used in the majority of infant formulas sold in the U.S.
Additionally, vitaMedMDTM Prenatal-1 comes in a citrus-flavored in a single-dose to help reduce unpleasant tastes or "burp-ups" that accompanies many other vitamins.
